The Dartmoor Trust has financed the digitisation of this important historic collection of photographs taken by the author and antiquarian R. Hansford Worth between the 1880s and 1940s, the originals held by the Torquay Natural History Museum. The Trust has contributed £6500 to this work, eventually resulting in around 5500 images being added to the Dartmoor Trust Archive for public view.
The majority of the original photographs exist as small format negatives (approx 3.5x6cm). With no obvious emulsion on the negative it is not always possible to determine which is the correct side from which to view the image. This inevitably results in a number of the final images being ‘back to front’, with no detail in the photograph itself to verify this.
We need your help. Should you discover such an image while browsing the collection please email us to let us know, giving the negative reference number as it appears on the website. This will allow us to correct the orientation of the picture in question. If you can add any further information to the photograph, or indeed to any photo in the Archive collection, we’d welcome your input.
