Wistman's Wood from the south-east

Record Number: 106706
Wistman's Wood from the south-east. While most oak woods on Dartmoor consist of sessile oaks, Wistman's Wood, Black Tor Beare and Piles Copse contain English (Pedunculate) oaks. These three isolated woods may be survivals of primeval woodland dating from before human deforestation, surviving because they are on steep granite clitter, making access difficult for grazing livestock. Wistman's Wood is a National Nature Reserve.
