Burnard described the photograph as "The leat at Stanlake frozen up Xmas 1887".
The leat shown is the Devonport Leat that was built in the 1790's to channel water from the West Dart, Cowsic and Blackbrook rivers to the booming docks of Devonport in Plymouth.
The late nineteenth century saw a series of very cold winters across Britain. For example snow settled in the streets in London on 11 October 1887.
